Updated September 2026.
D2D sales means door-to-door sales: a rep walks a neighborhood, knocks, and sells a product or service to the homeowner in person. Most D2D reps are 1099 contractors paid per sale. The biggest D2D industries today are pest control, solar, home security, roofing and fiber internet.
D2D is shorthand for door-to-door. In sales it describes the channel, not the product: the rep goes to the customer’s front door instead of waiting for a call or a click. You will also see it written as “door knocking,” “canvassing,” “field sales” or “direct sales.”
Industry terms you will hear on day one, like knock-to-close rate, blitz and chargeback, are defined in our D2D glossary.
Almost all D2D pay is commission. Per-sale amounts vary a lot by industry: pest and fiber pay less per sale but close faster and more often, while solar pays more per deal but each deal takes longer and falls through more often.
The industry funnel runs roughly like this: 20-30% of knocks reach a person, 30-50% of those hear a pitch, 10-25% of pitches close. Overall, 1-5% of knocks become sales (The D2D Experts benchmarks). Your income is doors per day times that rate times the commission.
Run your own numbers on the pay calculator. These are per-sale rates, not an earnings promise.
It is a real job, and it is also a channel with bad actors. The honest version is 1099, commission only, and hard. The warning signs are unclear pay terms, fees to start, and a company that will not tell you when and how commission is paid.
We wrote a full, blunt answer here: Is door-to-door sales worth it? and a list of questions to ask any D2D company.
Door-to-door. In sales it means selling in person at the customer’s home.
A salesperson who knocks on residential doors in an assigned territory and closes sales at the door. Most are 1099 independent contractors paid per sale.
No. Most D2D companies train new reps. Prior sales, service or athletic experience helps because the job is mostly handling rejection and staying consistent.
Usually 1099. At Velocity One, reps are 1099 independent contractors paid 100% commission with no base salary.
Fiber internet and pest control are common starting points because the pitch is short and demand is high. Fiber pays $200-$225 per activated install at Velocity One.
It means selling fiber internet service to homeowners at their door, usually in neighborhoods where a new fiber network was just built.
